It’s Fire Door Safety Week FDSW_Web_Logo
15th – 21st September

Here are some top tips for helping to ensure your fire doors can help protect you in the event of a fire:

Tip 1…

Never prop fire doors open with a fire extinguisher or other item. Fire doors can’t help reduce the risk of fire spreading if they’re propped open. Extinguishers should be in their allocated place in case they’re needed.

Tip 2…

Have automatic closing mechanisms fitted to your fire doors which close automatically when the fire alarm sounds.

Tip 3…

Carry out a visual inspection of your fire doors regularly. Check that smoke strips are still intact; and that any remedial work hasn’t damaged the structure of the door.

Tip 4…

Your fire doors should have intumescent seals, these expand up to 10 times their original size in the event of a fire to seal any gaps around the door.

Tip 5…

For automatic closing fire doors, check these are working when you undertake your weekly fire alarm test.

 Tip 6…

Use third party certificated fire doors and components, ensuring they are fitted and maintained by competent personnel. All door ironmongery should be CE marked.

 Tip 7…

Finishing the tips with the same message as the beginning, as it’s something that’s seen time and time again, NEVER EVER prop fire doors open. Use automatic closing doors linked to the fire alarm if you want doors open.
